 Hits: 0 Updated:

RATING:

We have tried it and it requires GPS location fix before launching. Not good! We would prefer ability to set location by hand too - in case you are indoors, trying to plan travel or at an airport etc. It is nice though that they have chosen Windows Mobile as their first platform...

More information from the vendor follows.

Nvidia cozies up to Microsoft - Tegra coming to Zune HD, Windows Mobile 7 and Windows CE smartbooks?  --

RATING:

It is pathetic, that Microsoft has released an app for iPhone claiming that rationale behind it was: Windows Mobile phones do not have enough graphic power. Clearly in the era of mobile gaming with graphics power of regular gaming consoles, having strong hardware acceleration is essential (apart from having support for industry-standard OpenGL ES 2.0 instead of Microsoft-proprietary Direct3D)...

(on photo above: booth person from Nvidia team at Mobile World Congress - posing especially for us)

So what is going on? It looks like Nvidia cannot yet confirm that Zune HD will be using their chips - because Microsoft has not confirmed it yet - but they already now are badmouthing Google Android and cozying up to Microsoft:

Mike Rayfield, general manager for Nvidia's mobile business unit, said Nvidia preferred Microsoft's Windows CE over Android because of CE's maturity. He said Android currently has a rough user interface.

...

Windows CE also has a "low memory footprint and a good collection of apps," Rayfield said.

He said Nvidia is also improving Tegra for use on Windows Mobile, a close variant of Windows CE, for ARM-based smartphones.

Commentary: we remember seeing during Mobile World Congress representatives of Nvidia who were giving away leaflets about future smartphones with Windows CE logo on it. Clearly it was long-year Nvidia'a target to gain Microsoft mobility for their mobile graphics chips and it looks like they will succeed in this endeavor in the end.

At last: Microsoft incentivizes employees to use Windows Mobile phones!  --

RATING:

We were annoyed when we have seen at various places Microsoft employees using phones not powered by Windows Mobile and latest move of Microsoft might change it slighlty:

Recently Microsoft has fired few thousand people to show off, that they are implementing some cost reductions too. Now, as a further step, Microsoft has decided not to pay back for cellular data plans of their employees if they don't use Windows Mobile phones! Since some data plans are bound to RIM BlackBerry usage or to iPhone usage or to Palm Pre usage - clearly it was silly that Microsoft was indirectly sponsoring these devices that are competitive to Windows Mobile.

We know of many more cases where Microsoft employees and Microsoft partners are using and promoting smartphones that are in direct competition to Windows Mobile - like iPhone and Google Android - but this is a wholly different fairytale that we will not discuss here. Here the topic is: Microsoft at last is putting in place some real (financial!) incentive to foster usage of Windows Mobile phones among their employees.

Finally let us not forget about dog food:

To say that a company "eats its own dog food" means that it uses the products that it makes. "Dogfooding" is a means of conveying the company's confidence in its own products.

Too often we can see companies that are selling some products or services, but are running their mission-critical stuff not on their own products.

Finally we hope, that situation where Microsoft is releasing mobile software for iPhone only, without even releasing any version for Windows Mobile - as it happened here and here - will not happen again...

RATING:

Another program for Windows Mobile from JGUI!

More info from the developer follows.

* * * * *

New program: We Are Together (for Windows phones) allows you to exchange your Calendar, Task, Contact with your friend or workmate. None new things to learn. Just select your item, and give the friend's phone number.

More: www.jgui.net/wat/

Of course both phones have to use We Are Together program. But it's free for one day. You can send to your friend the link of setup file, he/she will download, install, and receive your Calendar, or Task, or Contact item, immediately and free.

For security reasons, you can set if you want to get new items from everybody, who uses We Are Together program, or only from someone in your Contacts, or only from one defined (selected) number. It's done in this program general settings dialog:

Technically, this program uses ordinary SMS text messages to exchange items. So you don't need to set a special wireless mode, or afraid about extra costs.
